‘Family Guy’ Season 22 Episode 2 ‘Supermarket Pete’ Review: An Intriguing B-Story Is Paired With A Charmless A-Story

Family Guy Season 22 Episode 2 “Supermarket Pete” focuses on Peter Griffin, the main protagonist of the series (voiced by Seth MacFarlane), receiving two unpaid months off from his boss at Pawtucket Brewery, Preston Lloyd (voiced by Peter Macon).

This unpaid leave is a result of Lloyd suggesting that the brewery should transition to an open floor plan, causing it to be under construction for two months.

Peter ends up getting a job at the Stop ‘N Shop where his wife, Lois Griffin (voiced by Alex Borstein), does her grocery shopping.

This upsets Lois since she sees this grocery store as a way to escape her struggles in her normal life. Lois lashes out at Peter for taking her paradise away from her after she is banned due to her behavior towards an employee.

Meanwhile, Brian Griffin, the Griffin’s talking dog (also voiced by MacFarlane) and Joe Swanson, the series’ resident police officer (voiced by Patrick Warburton), share with Brian a murder case that they want to use as the basis for a potential true crime novel.

Swanson and Brian take creative liberties while writing the novel and solve the case themselves.

Even though the episode’s subplot surrounding Joe and Brian’s misadventures was not the main focus, it was nevertheless the most thought-provoking aspect that the episode had to offer.

This subplot had a strong message about how creating a true crime story, whether through writing a novel or recording a podcast, only leads to the victims being exploited for the artist’s personal gain. It’s an important lesson about the dangers of exploitation.

The episode’s main plot severely lacked charm due to the portrayal of Lois as a picky brat. Lois lashing out at Peter for supposedly taking her safe space away makes her seem unsympathetic.

“Supermarket Pete” was a minor improvement over last week’s episode as it is held afloat by its thoughtful subplot, but it is still held back by the portrayal of Lois.
