Fall Out Boy and Missy Elliot teamed up to revamp the theme song of the original Ghostbusters movie for the all-female reboot – and no one seems to like it.
Fall Out Boy announced Thursday that “Ghostbusters (I’m Not Afraid)” featuring a verse by Missy Elliot had been released.
Not long after people started taking a listen did they start voicing their concerns on Twitter about the reworking of the theme – originally performed by Ray Parker Jr.
The outrage over the song wasn’t reserved for passionate tweeters. Publications like Time, Vanity Fair and Gothamist also shared their disgust for Fall Out Boy’s track.
Time: “Fall Out Boy’s nightmare-inducing cover of Ray Parker Jr.’s corny yet classic theme song, “Ghostbusters (I’m Not Afraid).” The Hot Topic-friendly track features singer Patrick Stump repeatedly yelping the phrase “I’m not afraid” while a nameless chorus whispers the word “ghostbusters.” Surely this cover will inspire some 9th grader to timidly pump their fists in the air before adding the track to their emo-goth playlist.”
Vanity Fair: “This disastrously overproduced, Haunted-Mansion-goes-to-Warped-Tour cover strips away the original’s goofy charm, replacing it with pounding percussion and Patrick Stump’s signature nasal wail.”
Gothamist: “The new Ghosbusters theme song has been dumped onto the world like a tub of slime, featuring the screeching vocals of whoever the lead singer of Fall Out Boy is. (Adam Levine‘s little emo brother? Fake Trent Reznor?).”
Ghostbusters, starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, hits theaters July 15.
