Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg revealed the long-awaited Facebook “phone” – Facebook Home. Facebook Home is a downloadable software that falls somewhere between an operating system and an app that seeks to improve the mobile social messaging experience, according to Wired.
Facebook Home is making its debut on a new phone manufactured by HTC and carried by AT&T that runs on the Android OS.
"We wanted to start off trying to rethink some of those core things," Zuckerberg said in an interview with Fortune, talking about Android features. "How could these be better if, instead of the current system you have, they were people-centric in all the themes that Facebook stands for."
Essentially, Zuckerberg and company have designed something that makes Facebook a central part of one’s phone, without actually making a new phone. The social media website’s app is already No. 1 in the mobile market in the U.S. as far an engagement is concerned, accounting for 24% of all time spent on mobile devices, reported USA Today.
These statistics, along with the fact that Facebook has over one billion active users, are not lost on Zuckerberg, and he’s ready to cash in on it – that includes getting Facebook Home on Apple’s iOS.
“We'd love to offer this on iPhone, and we just can't today," Zuckerberg explained. "We will work with Apple to do the best experience that we can within what they want, but I think that a lot of people who really like Facebook — and just judging from the numbers, people are spending a fifth of their time in phones on Facebook. That's a lot of people."
The $99 HTC phone that will debut Facebook Home will go on sale April 12.
