‘Facebook Murder’ Trial: Kyle Dube Sentenced To 60 Years In Prison For Killing Nichole Cable

Kyle Dube, 22, was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the kidnapping and murder of 15-year-old Nichole Cable.

Dube was convicted of the crime in March, almost two years after police say he lured Cable to her death with a fake Facebook profile. Cable died of asphyxiation on May 12, 2013, after communicating with Dube, who was masquerading as ‘Brian Butterfield,’ via Facebook. Dube claimed he lured Cable out of her home in the hopes of kidnapping her in disguise so that he could rescue her and be the hero. Early reports claimed that Dube grabbed Cable and put her in the back of his pickup truck, only to find her dead when he went to move her.

A Maine court sentenced Dube to 60 years in prison for Cable’s murder and 30 for her kidnapping, but Judge Ann Murray said the two sentences could be served concurrently, meaning at the same time, bringing the total time to 60 years in prison. During sentencing, Murray noted Dube’s “utter lack of remorse” in the case, citing testimony that said he attempted to remove evidence from Nichole’s body after discovering she had died – scraping her fingernails and removing her clothes before burying her in the woods. “I think this is a chillingly remorseless response to killing another human being,” Murray told the court.

Defense lawyer Stephen Smith has reportedly filed an appeal for the conviction and also plans to appeal the sentence.
