Eydie Gorme, Legendary Singer, Dies At 84

Eydie Gorme, who sang “Blame it on the Bossa Nova,” died on Saturday in Las Vegas following a short illness. She was 84.

Gorme won a Grammy in 1963 for her English-speaking hit “Blame it on the Bossa Nova,” and won over Spanish speaking music fans with her 1964 hit “Amor.” Gorme had gotten her big break back in 1953 when she was cast as a singer for The Tonight Show right out of High School.

On The Tonight Show, Gorme sang solos and duets with her eventual husband Steven Lawrence. They performed together as Steve & Eydie for five years before tying the knot in 1957. After leaving The Tonight Show, the newlyweds stared in their own sitcom – The Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme Show. Together, Gorme and Lawrence travelled the country with their music into the 2000s.

"Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more the first time I heard her sing," Lawrence said, following his wife’s death. "While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop vocalists of all time."

Gorme is survived by her husband, a son and a granddaughter.
