It’s only been two days since Olympic great April Ross, 30, hit the most acclaimed beach volleyball court in the world with her volleyball partner since 2007, Jennifer Kessy, 35, to take on the greatest beach volleyball team of all time, the nearly undefeated Misty May-Treanor, 35, and Kerri Walsh Jennings, 33 who have been winning tournaments since 2001 and gold medals since 2004.

Now that May-Treanor has retired and Walsh Jennings will be partnering with someone new, it seems likely that the role of best in the business might be up for grabs, and Kessy and Ross are ready for it. However, it wasn’t always the case for Ross, who talked exclusively with Uinterview about how indoor volleyball was initially her game before her friend convinced her to play on the beach. “So I went out,” Ross told us. “I was terrible, and I don’t know why I liked it because I usually only like things that I’m good at, but I think it was just being out on the beach and the culture. It was a ton of fun, so I stuck with it and finally got better and better.”

When Ross really set her sights on going to the Olympics with partner Kessy, however, is when she started taking her diet seriously and getting into real shape. “We looked at everything we did as far as how we practice, how we train, and one of the big things is how we eat, and we changed our diet a lot. Cut out a lot of carbs, cut out a lot of sugars, started eating more natural, more organic. Just as healthy and clean as possible — salads, vegetables and lean meats all are fair game,” she said.
