EXCLUSIVE: Joy Cioci's 2013 Collection Inspired By The Sea

Joy Cioci's ready-to-wear Spring / Summer 2013 collection, which took place at the box theater in Lincoln Center on Monday, stayed to true to the designer's intricate and romantic style by channeling the 1920s with lace, beads and pieces that have movement. Inspired by the sea and the Neptunian Goddess, Cioci's designs showcased exotic fish skins and translucent shades of blue that transmitted the summer beach feel, but were as feminine and glamorous as ever. The models, standing in a sandbox, sported no shoes, which allowed the garments to speak for themselves — particularly a pleated baby-blue maxi dress with a white bodice and bold wide-legged pants with original prints, which promise to become staples next season.

"My inspiration was based on the water and the late '20s syncronized swimmers," Cioci told Uinterview exclusively. "I fell in love with their movement, they way they reflect one and another. I wanted to use elements of the ocean like stingray skins and shells." Presenting swimwear for the first time offered some opportunities for Cioci. "I consulted friends who are surfer and asked, 'What's your ideal wetsuit?' " she said. "I'm from Florida so it was nice to finally do swimwear!"
