Former Washington state schoolteacher Mary Kay Letourneau defended having sex with a 12-year-old student in 1996 this week by claiming she was unaware the affair was illegal.
“If someone had told me, if anyone had told me, there is a specific law that says this is a crime,” Letourneau, 56, stated in an interview on Australia’s Channel Seven on Sunday Night. “I did not know. I’ve said this over and over again. Had I’d known, if anyone knows my personality. Just the idea, this would count as a crime.”
Letourneau pleaded guilty to second-degree rape of a child in 1997 after she admitted to having an affair with then-student Vili Fualaau, whom she alleged initiated the relationship after aggressively chasing after her. Letourneau was reportedly a married 34-year-old mother of four when the affair started.

The disgraced teacher and Fualaau, who is now 35, eventually married in 2005 after Letourneau gave birth to two daughters: 19-year-old Georgia and 21-year-old Audrey. Georgia was born when her mother was in prison, while Audrey was born after Letourneau was first arrested.
In the same interview with Australia’s Channel Seven, the couple’s daughters revealed how normal they feel their life situation is, despite what many others may believe.

“He definitely feels like a young dad now that I’m at that adult age to where I can go to a bar,” Audrey said of her father. “He’s like a ‘friend dad.'”
