Former Saturday Night Live writer Kevin Brennan has faced severe backlash for his tweets that mocked actor Matthew Perry’s recent death.
On October 28, Perry, 54, was found dead in a jacuzzi after an apparent drowning.
Perry had been open about his past battle with alcohol and opioid addiction and was reportedly sober when he died.
There were no illicit drugs found on the premises, but police sources reported authorities discovered various prescription pills at his home.
Brennan, who hosts the podcast Misery Loves Company, posted on X: “DROWNED IN A HOT TUB. HAHAHAHA.”
Fans were immediately in an uproar and flooded Brennan’s accounts with appalled comments.
As furious social media users expressed their outrage, Brennan didn’t flinch at the strong reaction. When a social media user asked him, “Why is drowning in a hot tub funny?” Brennan replied: “Because it’s not very deep.”
Another person commented, “What a p—- I hope you never are affected by this insidious disease.” Brennan replied, “Sounds like fun.”
In response to the continued backlash, Brennan simply asked on his X account: “Am I trending yet?”
This was met with an even bigger wave of outrage. One disgusted user wrote, “Ending. Not trending.”
Another user wrote to Brennan, “Are you that desperate to try and stay relevant? No one knew who you were. Millions knew & loved w/o hesitation Matthew. His past didn’t change that, and it made him stronger. He passed away with more class, & dignity than you could ever hope to have.”
