Ex-GOP Rep. Liz Cheney Gets Standing Ovation At The White House As Biden Awards Her With Presidential Citizens Medal

President Joe Biden has honored Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi) and former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) with the Presidential Citizens Medal.

This medal is the second-highest civilian award in the U.S., second only to the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

On Jan. 2, Biden awarded the medal to 20 people in a ceremony at the White House, including Americans who fought for marriage equality and two of the president’s longtime friends, former Sens. Ted Kaufman (D-Delaware) and Chris Dodd (D-Connecticut).

“President Biden believes these Americans are bonded by their common decency and commitment to serving others,” the White House declared in a statement. “The country is better because of their dedication and sacrifice.”

“You are elected officials who served in difficult times with honor, decency, and ensure our democracy delivers,” Biden stated during the ceremony as he listed descriptions of the group of recipients.

“I think it’s pretty d— simple,” he added. “Our democracy begins and ends with the duties of citizenship. That’s our work for the ages. That’s what all of you – and I mean this – all of you embody.”

One by one, an announcer read the names of each recipient, who was presented with the medal by the president.

When the announcer called Cheney’s name and announced she was being honored “for putting the American people over party,” the audience gave loud and sustained applause, which led to a standing ovation. Minutes later, Thompson also received a standing ovation when he was granted an award for “his lifelong dedication to safeguarding our Constitution,” according to the description read by the announcer.

Thompson and Cheney, the chair and vice chair of the now-defunct House Jan. 6 committee, were accused by President-elect Donald Trump of destroying evidence from their investigation of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.

The former Wyoming congresswoman responded that Trump’s suggestion has no “conceivably appropriate factual or constitutional basis.”

She also declared that “any lawyer who attempts to pursue that course would quickly find themselves engaged in sanctionable conduct.”
