Former CNN anchor Don Lemon criticized Time magazine for naming President-elect Donald Trump as its Person of the Year. “Since he began running for President in 2015, perhaps no single individual has played a larger role in changing the course of politics and history than Trump,” the magazine wrote.
“The American presidency has evolved across these eras; its influence has not diminished,” it continued. “Today, we are witnessing a resurgence of populism, a widening mistrust in the institutions that defined the last century, and an eroding faith that liberal values will lead to better lives for most people. Trump is both agent and beneficiary of it all.”
“For marshaling a comeback of historic proportions, for driving a once-in-a-generation political realignment, for reshaping the American presidency and altering America’s role in the world, Donald Trump is Time’s 2024 Person of the Year,” it declared.
Lemon expressed his disappointment with the outlet’s announcement on a TikTok livestream.
“Time magazine, what are you doing,” he asked. “You have someone on the cover of your magazine who is an adjudicated assaulter. You have someone who inspired an insurrection. You have someone who, without a doubt, the evidence is there, tried to overturn a free and fair election.”
Lemon pointed out that Trump had been “found guilty on multiple criminal counts.”
“There is a convicted felon on the cover of Time magazine as the Person of the Year,” the ex-CNN news anchor added. “Maybe we’re being scammed. Did someone put out a fake tweet or something about this?”
In addition to Trump, Time has named people like Mark Zuckerberg Person of the Year back in 2010 and even Greta Thunberg in 2019.
In 2023, Lemon was fired from CNN after making sexist comments about former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. The network eventually paid him $24 million to settle his lawsuit against them.
