Erykah Badu Faces Backlash Over Comments About Bill Cosby & Hitler
Erykah Badu is facing a social media backlash over her comments made during an interview about seeing the good in Bill Cosby and Adolf Hitler.
During an interview with Vulture, Badu spoke on separating the “art from the artist” starting with Cosby. “I love what he’s done for the world,” she said. “But if he’s sick, why would I be angry with him? The people that got hurt, I feel so bad for them. I want them to feel better, too. But sick people do evil things; hurt people hurt people.”
Badu stuck to her words. “I know I could be crucified for saying that, because I’m supposed to be on the purple team or green team,” she said. “I’m not trying to rebel against what everybody’s saying, but maybe I want to measure it. People can be bad for certain things. They could be bad around children. The could be bad with power. Are those people all “bad”?”
The singer went further and noted that she even saw something good in Hitler. “I see good in everybody. I saw something good in Hitler,” she said. Badu stated that Hitler was a “wonderful painter” and also had a “bad childhood.”
The responses to her statements drew a predictable outcry from social media.
This #ErykahBadu conversation brings some interesting things/questions, particularly from a Christian theological perspective.
