Erin Andrews Settles Lawsuit With Nashville Marriott Over Stalking Incident
Erin Andrews, the Dancing with the Stars host and NFL sideline reporter, has settled her lawsuit against a Tennessee hotel in which she was unknowingly videotaped through a peephole.
Erin Andrews Settles With Hotel
It was announced Monday that Andrews had reached a settlement with the Nashville Marriott at Vanderbilt University. Last month, Andrews was awarded $55 million in her joint suit against the hotel franchise owner and Michael David Barrett, the stalker who had taped her. It was made public this week that the hotel will pay $26 million of the sum.
“The litigation is over,” Andrews’ lawyer Randall L. Kinnard told E! News. “Erin Andrews is satisfied with the settlement, and she was very courageous throughout this litigation.”
In awarding Andrews $55 million, the jury hoped to ensure that not only did Barrett realize the extent of his actions, but that hotels accept their responsibility in safeguarding the privacy of their guests.
“It’s important that when we walk into hotels or any public building that says they’re going to take care of us that they take care of us, and we feel safe and secure in their environment,” juror Terry Applegate told NBC News. “And this hotel did not do that.”
Barrett had installed the videotape in the peephole of Andrews’ room at the Marriott in September 2008, when she was working as a college football reporter for ESPN. In 2010, he pleaded guilty to interstate stalking and served two years in prison for the Nashville incident, as well as a separate incident in Columbus, Ohio.
