Emma Watson has been the most recent victim of photo theft, with an anonymous person leaking images of the actress on the Internet.
In 2014, a countdown appeared online titled, “Emma you are next,” with the implication that private photos of the Beauty and the Beast actress would be posted. The countdown turned out to be a hoax, but this week Watson did have photos of her stolen and posted.
“Photos from a clothes fitting Emma had with a stylist a couple of years ago have been stolen,” confirmed Watson’s publicist. “They are not nude photographs. Lawyers have been instructed and we are not commenting further.”
Since Tuesday, the leaked photos have been photoshopped to make them more revealing and have been posted in various places alongside nude photos that do not show the face of the subject. Years ago when the so-called “Celebgate” scandal began, at which time dozens of female celebrities had private photos stolen and posted online, Watson spoke out against the act of abuse.
“Even worse than seeing women’s privacy violated on social media is reading the accompanying comments that show such lack of empathy,” she tweeted.
Watson is often targeted and threatened after giving one of her signature impassioned UN speeches about the importance of feminism.
