Eminem performed an anti-Donald Trump rap during the 2017 BET Hip-Hop Awards.
In a black hoodie, the rapper spit a vicious, profanity-laden freestyle rap called a “cypher verse.” He began with the line, “This is calm before the storm right here,” calling back to a recent Trump press conference in which he suggested he might take military action against North Korea. The powerful song was not accompanied by music, and Eminem rapped standing in a Detroit parking garage in front of a group of African-American men.
The routine lasted just over four minutes, and the rapper touched on topics of racism, immigration, Trump’s golf trips, and his attacks on NFL players kneeling in protest. “He gets an enormous reaction / When he attacks the NFL so we focus on that / Instead of talking Puerto Rico or gun reform for Nevada,” the rap continues. “All these horrible tragedies and he’s bored and would rather / Cause a Twitter storm with the Packers / Then says he wants to lower our taxes / Then who’s gonna pay for his extravagant trips / Back and forth with his fam to his golf resorts and his mansions?”
Later on he rapped, “From his endorsement of [Steve] Bannon / Support from the Klansmen / Tiki torches in hand for the soldier that’s black / And comes home from Iraq / And is still told to go back to Africa.”
And then Eminem brought the topic back to the NFL. “Now, if you’re a black athlete / You’re a spoiled little brat for tryna use your platform or your stature / To try to give those a voice who don’t have one / He says, ‘You’re spittin’ in the face of vets who fought for us,’ you bastard / Unless you’re a POW who’s tortured and battered / ’Cause to him, you’re zeros / ’Cause he don’t like his war heroes captured / That’s not disrespecting the military.”
He ended the rap with the declaration, “The rest of America stand up / We love our military, and we love our country / But we f–king hate Trump.”
This is not the first anti-Trump rap Eminem has unleashed on the president. Last year, the rapper released an eight-minute track called “Campaign Speech,” in which he blasted Trump after he beat Hillary Clinton.
Ostracized NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who led the charge for kneeling to protest police brutality, tweeted his support of Eminem. “I appreciate you @Eminem ✊🏾,” he said.
Kaepernick was joined by many others on Twitter who tweeted in support.
