Emile Hirsch Makes First Court Appearance For Sundance Incident

Emile Hirsch made his first court appearance Monday for allegedly assaulting a Paramount executive at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

Emile Hirsch In Court

Hirsch stood before Judge Kara Pettit in Park City, Utah to face charges of aggravated assault and intoxication Monday morning, reported Deadline. The Into the Wild actor was joined at the first hearing for his case by attorney Neil Kaplan and two other lawyers. In addition to appearing in court, Hirsch was finger printed and had his mugshot taken.

In late January, Hirsch was attending a Sundance party at the Tao nightclub when the incident occurred with Paramount’s Dani Bernfeld. It’s alleged that Hirsch approached Bernfeld, asking her why she looked “so touch,” and calling her “a rich kid” who was out of place at the indie film festival. In the alleged events that followed, Hirsch put Bernfeld in a chokehold, pulled her over a table and onto the floor and continued to choke her before he was pulled away.

Initially, Hirsch told the Park City PD that he’d had three or four drinks before the incident, but later stated that he was so intoxicated that he did not remember any of the events in the nightclub. When he was formally charged with assault last month, Hirsch’s lawyers revealed that the actor had checked himself into rehab to deal with alcoholism.

Hirsch is next expected in court for a roll call hearing April 13. If found guilty of the third degree felony aggravated assault charge, Hirsch could face five years in jail and a $5,000 fine.
