Elton Simpson has been named as one of the terror suspects killed in Garland, Tex., Sunday night after open firing at an anti-Muslim event at the Curtis Culwell Center.

Who Are The Garland, Texas Shooters?

Simpson was shot and killed by police Sunday after he and another man – who is thought to have been his roommate – wielded guns outside the center and fired shots that wounded a security guard, reported The New York Times. Before Simpson and the unidentified man could proceed into the event where people were invited to show off cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, a traffic cop shot them dead.

The security guard who was injured in the firefight, Bruce Joiner, has been released from the hospital after receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to the ankle.

Prior to Sunday night, Simpson had already been singled out by the F.B.I. as a possible jihadist. In 2010, Simpson was prosecuted and charged with plotting to go to Somalia to engage in Jihad and for lying to a federal agent. While Simpson was found guilty of the latter, lesser charge, the judge did not convict him for plans to engage in terrorism. His punishment included three years’ probation.

Simpson had been living in Phoenix, Ariz. with the alleged second suspect in an apartment that police have been searching for clues as to motive and connections. Police are also still investigating at the scene of the shooting in Texas.

Pamela Geller, the president of the American Freedom Defense Initiative, an anti-Islamic organization, organized The Muhammad Art Exhibit and Contest. The contestant who presented the best cartoon of Muhammad stood to win a $10,000 prize, according to NBC News.

In most interpretations of Islam, drawing images of Muhammad is considered offensive.

“From the capitals of Europe to the streets of Garland, Texas,” said Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Tex), “we have been confronted by attackers who cannot tolerate our open society.”
