Fiona Hill, a former Trump adviser and highly respected longtime Russia observer, said in an interview that Elon Musk is being used by Russian President Vladimir Putin to transmit a message.

“It’s very clear that Elon Musk is transmitting a message for Putin,” she told Politico.

In October, Musk — the richest man in the world — tweeted suggestions for a peace agreement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, including Ukraine recognizing Crimea as part of Russia, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly refused to accept.

She noted that Musk touched on specific points, including renegotiating control over Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, regions illegally annexed by Russia in October to guarantee water supply to Crimea, a dry region. The proposal was praised by the Kremlin.

Hill pointed out to the fact that the billionaire had made the same suggestions during a conference in Aspen, before the annexation.

“It was a very specific reference,” Hill noted. “Kherson and Zaporizhzhia essentially control all the water supplies to Crimea. Crimea is a dry peninsula. It has aquifers, but it doesn’t have rivers. It’s dependent on water from the Dnipro River that flows through a canal from Kherson. It’s unlikely Elon Musk knows about this himself. The reference to water is so specific that this clearly is a message from Putin.”

Hill added she doesn’t believe the war will have a “satisfying end” for any of the parts involved and said the conflicts represents “the end of the existing world order.”

“There is not going to be a happy or satisfying ending for anybody, and it’s also not going to be happy or satisfying for Vladimir Putin either, honestly,” she said.

Musk is set to complete his billion-dollar purchase of Twitter in a few months, giving him total control over one of the world largest social media platforms.
