Elizabeth Vargas, an ABC News anchor and reporter, has checked herself back into rehab to combat alcoholism.
Vargas, 51, revealed her latest stint at a recovery center in a statement obtained by People magazine.
“As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process," said Vargas, who checked herself into rehab during a summer vacation. "I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry."
Vargas added that she is “committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease.”
Vargas first opened up about her struggle with alcoholism back in November 2013. "Like so many people, I am dealing with addiction," Vargas said at the time in a statement to CNN. "I realized I was becoming increasingly dependent on alcohol. I am in treatment and am so thankful for the love and support of my family, friends and colleagues at ABC News."
"Like so many others, I will deal with this challenge a day at a time," Vargas added. "If coming forward today gives one other person the courage to seek help, I'm grateful."
ABC News, as they did following the announcement of Vargas’ initial treatment for her her addiction, has vowed to stand behind the reporter. "We look forward to having her back at ABC News when she feels ready to return," ABC News said.
Vargas, who is married to singer-songwriter Marc Cohn with whom she has two children, has attributed her alcohol dependence on a lifelong battle with anxiety and panic attacks.
