Elizabeth Smart Speaks On Her Kidnappers: 'To Her I Was A Slave, And To Him, I Was An Object'

Elizabeth Smart gave an interview with NBC News’s Meredith Vieira to air Friday night in preparation for the release of her memoir My Story.

Smart was kidnapped in 2002 at the age of 14 and held captive by Brian David Mitchell and his wife Wanda Barzee — both of whom are currently serving jail time – for nine months until she was rescued. Now 25, Smart has gone to college, gotten married and started the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, which aims to protect children and bring missing people home.

Smart has had her story in the media for years. In 2003, her parents, Ed Smart and Lois Smart co-authored a book titled Bringing Elizabeth Home: A Journey of Faith and Hope, but My Story will be the first detailed account of the kidnapping from Smart herself.

In her upcoming interview with NBC, Smart speaks about her declaration in the book that she “didn’t feel human” when she was being held.

“To her, I was a slave, and to him, I was an object,” Smart says, making it clear that she never felt treated as a human being throughout her ordeal.

“I mean, here I was, a 14-year-old girl, ripped from my family, from my friends, from the people I loved. Being raped every day, not knowing when I’d be able to eat next, not knowing when I’d be able to drink next. And being chained to a tree,” she says.

My Story, written by Elizabeth Smart and Chris Stewart, will be released Oct. 7 and Smart’s interview with Vieira will air Friday at 10 p.m. on NBC.
