Elizabeth Peña Cause of Death

Peña's cause of death was documented as cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol, cardiopulmonary arrest, cardiogenic shock and acute gastrointestinal bleeding, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner, which made out the late actress’ death certificate.

On Oct. 14, Peña died at the age of 55 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. When her passing was first reported, it was stated that she'd died following a brief illness. For months leading up to her death, the actress had been suffering from cirrhosis of the liver. Hours before she suffered a cardiac arrest, she developed acute gastrointestinal bleeding.

Peña's nephew, Mario-Francisco Robles penned a tribute to his aunt in the Latino Review after her death. "She was our star. She was my star. We celebrated her triumphs. We sweated through her struggles," Robles wrote. "My family is heartbroken. There's now a void that will never be filled. All we can do now is remember your sharp sense of humor, your endless hunger for life, and your never ending pursuit of happiness."

Peña is survived by her husband Hans Rolla and two children.
