Eli Roth & Famke Janssen On ‘Hemlock Grove,’ Netflix [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO]

Hemlock Grove’s executive producer Eli Roth and leading actress Famke Janssen both believe that the Netlix horror series – which released its second season earlier this month – provides a unique take on the genre.

What might set Hemlock Grove apart from horror films and other contemporary horror series more than anything else is its home on Netflix. Roth, who directed Cabin Fever and Hostel for the big screen, found the streaming network to be incredibly flexible and open-minded when it came to his ideas, even encouraging him to push the envelope even further.

“Netflix was great because I would present an idea that would be completely out of left field and they would ask if I could take it a step further and I would go, ‘Can I!’” Roth told uInterview exclusively, adding, “We had a great team and Chic Eglee is a terrific showrunner.”

According to Roth, Netflix has also never tried to rein him in when it comes to the gore factor on Hemlock Grove. Everyone working on the show is in agreement that gore should be used to shock and scare, but mostly to push the story onward. “What’s great is that we all feel the same way,” Roth said. “I mean, my feeling with gore and scares or sex is that it’s got to make you wanna watch the show more and say, ‘What happens next?’ and sometimes if you go too far people just tune out—they go ‘Eh, it gets boring.’”

“It wasn’t about setting limitations on the show,” Roth explained. “It’s all about story, about making the viewers say ‘What happens next, what happens next?’”

For Janssen’s character Olivia Godfrey, that means viewers should never think they know what’s coming next for her. ”I always think that when you set up a character you never want to make that character that predictable,” the actress told uInterview. “Characters as diabolical as Olivia should be unpredictable.”
