Eight captives were discovered being held in a Houston home on Friday morning when local police visited the house and found the front door nailed shut. Police had been responding to a 911 call that suggested the home was holding people against their will.
Among the captives are four men between the ages of 50 and 80, who were kept in a trash-littered garage. The other captives are women, some of who police suggest might suffer from mental illness, reported CNN. It’s believed that some of the individuals may have been held against their will for up to 10 years.
Police suspect that the captives may have been homeless and lured into the house on the premise of an exchange for shelter and goods. “One of them seemed to think he was picked up off the street and brought here,” Sgt. JW McCoy told ABC. “In exchange for beer and cigarettes and a place to stay, he had to turn over his Social Security check.”
A suspect has been arrested in the case, and is currently in police custody, the Epoch Times is reporting.
