Eddie Redmayne Auditioned For Kylo Ren Part In ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

British actor Eddie Redmayne reveals he auditioned for the baddie in the Star Wars reboot that came out last winter.

EDDIE REDMAYNE AUDITIONED FOR KYLO REN PART

Redmayne, 34, said his audition for villain Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was “catastrophically bad.” Apparently, when auditioning for such a coveted, highly-anticipated film, auditioners are not given the actual script. “They gave me like a Star Trek scene — or like something from Pride and Prejudice. It was one of those films,” Redmayne explained. “With films that top secret, they don’t give you the actual lines. So they give you a scene from ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ but then they tell you you’re auditioning for the baddie. If you’re me, you then put some ridiculous voice on.”

Trying to create a Darth Vader-like bad guy while reciting Jane Austen does seem a difficult feat, and the actor admitted his audition was laughable.

“That was really a hilarious moment. Because it was Nina Gold — who I have to thank a lot because she’s cast me in several films — and she was just sitting there and I was trying again and again with different versions of my kind of ‘koohh paaaah’ [Darth Vader breathing sound] voice,” Redmayne continued. “And after like 10 shots she’s like, ‘You got anything else?’ I was like, ‘No.’”

The part eventually went to Adam Driver.

Redmayne, however, is set to star in the film adaptation of J.K. Rowling‘s book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which hits theaters Nov. 18.

Redmayne earned the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2015 for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. He also won a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for the same role. He was nominated for a second Best Actor Oscar for his stunning performance in The Danish Girl.
