Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss confirmed at SXSW in Austin, Texas, that Ed Sheeran will make an appearance on this season of the hit show.
Apparently Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, loves Sheeran, and the writers wanted to book the singer as a surprise for her. “This year we finally did it,” Benioff told a panel at the SXSW conference, which was being moderated by Williams and her on-screen sister Sophie Turner.
Turner joked that she’s “still waiting on [Justin] Bieber” to make his cameo for her. Weiss joked back that he would be invited to appear on season nine (the show is slated to end after season eight).
Most of the discussion was more serious, with the showrunners talking about their 140-page outline in the works for the final season. They revealed that usually they easily divvy up the episodes to write between them, but they have been fighting over who gets four of the six final episodes. “We fight over who’s going to kill Sansa,” they laugh.
As one can imagine, the panel did not divulge any spoilers about the upcoming season, but had a ton of jokes. The new season will premiere July 16.
