Ed Sheeran, Jimmy Fallon and The Roots’ Dynamic ‘Shape Of You’ Performance With Toy Instruments

Ed Sheeran performed his top hit “Shape of You” on Jimmy Fallon‘s The Tonight Show Monday, backed up by Fallon and hip-hop group The Roots. The rendition was part of the show’s “Classroom Instruments” series, which debuted in 2012 with Carly Rae Jepsen and her song “Call Me Maybe.”

‘Shape of You’ With Classroom Instruments

This performance was done with toy instruments, with Sheeran using a banana-shaped shaker for percussion, while singing over a mix of xylophone and kazoo ukulele. This arrangement is a contrast to the studio version of “Shape of You,” with its sparse pop. This rendition, however, still displayed the song’s original playfulness, highlighted by The Roots’ backing vocals.

“Shape of You” appears on Sheeran’s new album ÷ (Divide), which will be released March 3rd through Atlantic Records. The singer had released “Shape of You” and “Castle On the Hill” in January, and the songs rose to Number One and Number Six on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. This marked Sheeran as the first artist to debut two singles that ranked in the top 10 simultaneously. This original version of “Shape of You” has also dominated U.K. and Australian singles charts for seven consecutive weeks.

Other performers that have been featured on Fallon’s segment “Classroom Instruments” include Christina Aguilera (“Your Body”), Mariah Carey (“All I Want for Christmas is You”), Meghan Trainor (All About That Bass”) and Adele (“Hello”).
