Ed Sheeran’s latest single “Don’t” details an incident in which the girl the singer was seeing – rumored to be Ellie Goulding – hooked up with one of his friends while he was in the same hotel.
Sheeran admits that his anger at the cheating incident inspired “Don’t,” but that getting it off his chest and into the song helped him get over it. Roughly a year removed from the event, Sheeran says that he no longer associates “Don’t” with the people involved in the real-life inspiration.
"I got over the anger the moment I wrote the song. It's a song that came at the time that I needed to write,” Sheeran told The Sun. “That's the end of it. I'm grateful I could get a song out of it, to be honest. I don't feel it's about anyone any more, I'm not attached to that.
“The moment you attach someone to a song it becomes more difficult to sing every night,” Sheeran added.
The “Sing” singer elaborated about the incident in another interview, claiming that the issue was really about respect. "I was seeing someone for a bit, and then they ended up physically involved with one of my friends in the same hotel that we were staying in, while I was downstairs," he told the Daily Mirror. "And I feel like: 'Treat people how you want to be treated.'"
It’s been heavily rumored that the girl in the song is Goulding, whom he was suspected of dating in 2013. Though Goulding shut down the dating speculation on Twitter, the two were pictured holding hands at the MTV VMAs last year. It’s believed that the friend of Sheeran’s whom Goulding stepped out on him with was One Direction’s Niall Horan. Despite the alleged cheating event, Sheeran and Horan have been seen palling around since.
