Game of Thrones showrunners revealed months ago that Ed Sheeran would make a cameo in season seven, and the moment came in the season opener.
The decision was announced at SXSW back in March, when David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said they hired the singer to surprise Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, and who happens to be a big fan.
The day finally came when they shot their scene together. After the fantastic cold open in which Arya, pretending to be Walder Frey, gets revenge on the entire Frey family by poisoning all the Frey men, she meets a group of Lannister soldiers in the woods in the Riverlands. When she approaches, they invite her to sit and eat with them, and who was singing other than Sheeran.
The singer had few lines in the scene, but his character sat next to Arya, and saw a lot of screen time. Arya speaks mainly with the other soldiers, who say they are on their way to the Twins because of some ruckus with the Freys. When asked, Arya says she is on her way to King’s Landing to “kill the Queen,” and the soldiers laugh and laugh.
It is unclear if this group of young men will appear in future episodes, or if they were unnamed Lannister men simply introduced to give Sheeran reason to run into Arya. As such, it is also unclear (though unlikely) if Sheeran will continue his cameo into next week’s episode.
Some fans, however, had no idea that Sheeran would appear, and Twitter had a field day making fun of the cameo. Some were just confused as to what he was doing in Westeros, while others were taken out of the show at the sight of him. “The only bad part about first ep of season 7 Game of Thrones was Ed Sheeran ?,” said one user. “Why did they put Ed Sheeran on GoT… it feels less authentic and cheap ?,” said another.
Others just found it funny, and made their jokes. “Friends, please tell me more about how seeing Ed Sheeran in your dragon show is unrealistic,” wrote another user. “Ed Sheeran on #GoTS7… The club isn’t the best place to find a lover so the Riverlands is where I go…” said someone else, referencing a recent Sheeran song.
