Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been sentenced to death by the 12-person jury in Boston for aiding his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev in the April 15, 2013 bombing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.
On Friday, May 15 after 14 hours of deliberation the jury of seven women and five men revealed their death penalty decision. As they announced their decision in the Boston court, they revealed their findings on 12 factors that would support the death penalty in his particular case in which seven of 30 charges Tsarnaev was convicted on carried the possibility of a death sentence.
During the sentencing trial, the jurors were shown footage of the second bomb going off at the 2013 Boston Marathon. They were also shown photos and videos of the horrifying aftermath. People who survived the bombing that took the lives of bystanders Krystle Campbell, Martin Richard and Lingzi Lu testified in the courtroom before the jury.
Tsarnaev, along with his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, dropped backpacks at the finish line of the Boston Marathon that were holding pressure cooker bombs that had been loaded with gunpowder, BBS and nails. In total, the bombs injured 240 people, 17 of whom lost limbs.
Three days after the marathon, the brothers killed police officer Sean A. Collier while attempting to make a getaway.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev died during a standoff with police in the Boston suburb of Watertown. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was discovered the following day hiding in a boat that was being stored in a resident’s driveway and was subsequently arrested.
Now that he’s been sentenced to death by lethal injection, Tsarnaev is expected to be sent to the federal death row in Terre Haute, Ind. A years-long appeals process will likely ensue.
