Michel Mulder and Ronald Mulder, twins from the Netherlands, both captured medals at Sochi 2014 in the 500m speed skating competition.
Michel Mulder won gold, finishing just .01 seconds before Jan Smeekens crossed the finish line with a time of 69.31 seconds. In third place, was Ronald Mulder. Although he didn’t beat his brother in the end, Roland Mulder managed to have the day’s best time in his second-round, coming in at just 34.49. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t enough to bump off Michel Mulder or their fellow Dutchman, Smeekens.
Tae Bum Mo, who won the gold in the event at Vancouver 2010, ended up in fourth place, while Japan’s Joji Kate and Keiichiro Nagashima came in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
With their impressive performances on the ice, the Mulders became the second pair of twins to medal in the same event at a Winter Olympics. It first occurred in the 1984 Games when U.S. alpine skier brothers Phil and Steven Mahre both earned medals.
