‘Duck Dynasty’s Willie Robertson Shuts Down Congress Run Rumors

Willie Robertson, one of the stars of A&E’s wildly popular reality series Duck Dynasty, has been floated about as a possible contender for an opening Congressional seat in his district.

Reports claimed that “key Republican operatives” were of a mind to get Robertson to run for Louisianan’s 5th district, which includes Robertson’s hometown of Monroe. The current congressman, Rep. Rodney Alexander, plans to vacate his seat after fulfilling his term. Alexander, when asked about the possibility of having Robertson as his successor, claimed to be a fan of the series and happy with the positive attention the famously spiritual Robertson’s clan brings to Ouachita Parish, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Though he has some supporters, Robertson doesn’t have any plans of yet to launch a political career. “I heard today that I was doing that. Interesting. It’s news to me,” he told Fox News, adding, “I’m kinda busy right now. I’ve got a lot of stuff going on."

Congress looks like its going to have to wait to have Robertson join their ranks, although the unlikely reality star does have strong political positions and isn’t shy about sharing them. He gave an enthusiastic endorsement of Republican Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who he believes full-heartedly should run for President in the 2016 election. Robertson even went so far as to call him “my guy.” The Duck Dynasty star, known for his fondness for guns, also expressed his belief in the constitutionality of background checks, stating matter-of-factly, “I have a lot of weapons, and every time I have to fill out the paperwork.”

Robertson might lean to the right politically, but generally seems to prefer the idea of bipartisanship – especially when it comes to his show’s viewers. “I see people more together. I see 'em liking Duck Dynasty, so that brings the country together. It really does, ‘cause this show, it’s funny, it breaks through all the demographics,” he said.

Robertson does have a point. Duck Dynasty, which had its fourth season premiere on Wednesday, is a ratings hit. Last season it ranked only behind AMC’s The Walking Dead among cable series, averaging 8.4 million viewers per episode. The show’s third season finale yielded roughly 10 million.
