The singer Dua Lipa, best known for her single “New Rules” and other hit tracks, has been officially granted Albanian citizenship. The singer was born in London to Albanian immigrant parents and speaks Albanian as her native language.
The word “Dua” from her stage name is also a connection to her Albanian roots, meaning “Love” in the language and that part of her name was reportedly suggested by her grandmother.
The President of Albania, Bajram Begaj, wrote a post about the citizenship award saying online, “She has made us proud with her global career and engagement in important social causes.”
Not only has the popstar been very active in charitable actions for many groups, but she has also supported Albania heavily with a nonprofit she founded in 2016 called Sunny Hill. Through Sunny Hill, the singer has held fundraisers to support Albanians through difficulties including the 2019 Albanian earthquake.
Lipa also celebrated the moment with her own post, writing in Albanian, “Thank you, I’m feeling very proud.”
Dua Lipa’s last full-length album was the acclaimed Future Nostalgia which came out in 2020. She has yet to announce another full-length project, but has released singles here and there including “We’re Good,” which was part of the deluxe release of Future Nostalgia and a guest verse on the Megan Thee Stallion track “Sweetest Pie.”
She was recently seen modeling swimwear in Perth, Australia.
