Drew Barrymore: No Texting Breakups!

Think Facebook, Twitter, and unlimited texting help relationships become easier to maintain? Drew Barrymore begs to differ! The actress, who stars in the upcoming romantic comedy Going the Distance, thinks society’s dependence on technology has only made keeping in touch more difficult. "Ironically, with all this, ‘We’re now more connected than ever with technology,’ I don’t think we’ve ever been farther apart,” Barrymore told Nylon magazine. “I think it’s bullshit. Everyone feels more connected, but they’re weirdly disconnected.”

In her new film, Barrymore has a scene with her character’s long distance boyfriend, played by Justin Long, in which the two attempt phone sex. “You know, phone sex going awry is just a funny concept to me,” she said. “I thought, this is going to be one of those scenes where we have to go balls out, and if it doesn’t work, it’s going to be editing room floor crap.”

Last year, Barrymore and Long both appeared in the chick-flick He’s Just Not That Into You where her character there also becomes frustrated with having to deal with technology and dating. "I had this guy leave me a voicemail at work, so I called him at home, and then he emailed me to my BlackBerry, and so I texted to his cell, and now you just have to go around checking all these different portals just to get rejected by seven different technologies," her character whined. "It’s exhausting!"

These days Drew’s more focused on bigger truths – like not taking things for granted. “I had a big gap in my life where I wasn’t allowed to work at all because no one would hire me, which was great because I think you need that humility,” Barrymore said. “You have to have everything taken away, or you have to have a major reality check, so that you always appreciate what you have." –Natthakan Garunrangseewong
