After the shocking death of Drakeo The Ruler last month, his family held a press conference Thursday where they stated their intention to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the Once Upon A Time in LA festival. They claimed that the festival allowed a lack of security, which resulted in a crowd of armed men getting backstage, where they beat and stabbed the 28-year-old rapper to death.
Drakeo, whose full name was Darrell Caldwell, was waiting to perform at the L.A. music festival when a video shared by the family showed that his small group was attacked by at least 40 men in red who entered the fenced-in backstage space with hardly any security in view or attempting to intervene.
Tianna Purdue, the mother of Drakeo’s five-year-old son, expressed disbelief at the press conference. “How did these people get backstage, to an artist? Where was anyone? Where was anyone there to help him?
“Mr. Caldwell was lynched by 40 to 60 people,” family attorney James Bryant said when he had the opportunity to speak. “This would never have happened if those promoters had the proper security protocol. The world lost an amazing artist, a beautiful human being, a father.”
According to Bryant, they will be filing a wrongful death and negligence lawsuit on Monday against Live Nation and Bobby Dee Presents. Live Nation is also facing significant heat as one of the promoters of Travis Scott‘s disastrous Astroworld festival last year, where 10 attendees were killed and hundreds more injured.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the stabbing, but no suspects have been identified yet.
