Dr. Mehmet Oz arrived at the scene of a Manhattan accident after a taxi jumped onto the curb and severed the leg of a female pedestrian walking on the sidewalk.
When Oz approached the woman, a good Samaritan – plumber David Justino – and first reponders were already trying to treat the injured woman. Immediately following the incident, Justino came to the woman’s aid, removing his belt to use as a tourniquet.
“I was down there holding it and I felt somebody nudge me and I was a little angry and I said ‘I’m waiting for a doctor,’” Justino told ABC News station WABC-TV. “And I heard, ‘I’m Dr. Oz,’ and I went, ‘You’re Dr. Oz?’ I said what should I do, and he said, ‘You’re doing it.’”
Following the incident, Oz took to his Facebook page to post a picture of him with Justino and praise his valiant efforts. “While in a meeting in our offices near Rockefeller Center, I heard an accident occur on the street below. […] David Justino, a plumber from New York, took action, removing his belt and using it as a tourniquet. […] I applaud the quick thinking and heroic actions of David and the first responders. My prayers are with the victim for a speedy recovery.”
The injured woman was a British tourist. Another victim had only minor injuries and refused any medical treatment. The cab driver, 24-year-old Mohammad Himon, was questioned by the NYPD for over an hour and was released with three summonses.
