As Sony plans for Surviving Compton: Dre Suge & Michel’le release, hip-hop mogul Dr. Dre does not want to be portrayed as a man who beats women.
The upcoming biopic reportedly shows the former N.W.A. success being violent toward then-girlfriend Michel’le. The couple dated for six years over 30 years ago, and have a child together. While Dre claims he never hurt Michel’le while they were dating, Michel’le claims otherwise.
“When you’re living in it, you can’t see it. But I couldn’t believe that I was really living like that,” she told the Huffington Post last week. “And it really resonated with me. Never did I wake up and ask Dre, ‘Why did you hit me?'”
Dre has apologized in the past for his treatment of women. “I apologize to the women I’ve hurt,” he told The New York Times last year. “I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives.”
Dre and his team sent a cease and desist letter to Sony, warning the company that they will sue if Sony shows Dre’s character (played by Curtis Hamilton) being violent toward Michel’le (Rhyon Nicole Brown) in the film. The film currently contains a scene where Dre pulls Michel’le’s hair, hits her face, and pulls a gun on her.
The 2015 hit Straight Outta Compton faced critical backlash for leaving out the abusive part of Dr. Dre’s past.
According to sources, Dre”s legal team also dispatched a warning to Michel’le.
Surviving Compton will premiere on Oct. 15 on Lifetime.
