Downton Abbey, the BBC period drama, will reportedly come to an end after its sixth season.

Downton Abbey’s Last Season

Downton Abbey’s fifth season is currently airing in the states on PBS Masterpiece, and the sixth season will soon start filming. With much of the cast spending time in Los Angeles around the SAG Awards and allegedly looking for more Hollywood work, rumors have started to swirl that the end of the popular show is near.

Amid the speculation, U.K. broadcaster ITV said the stories were not rooted in fact – but the broadcaster did not explicitly shut down the possibility that the show only has another season left.

“We wouldn’t comment on speculative stories about our programs,”  ITV said in a statement.

As for members of the cast searching for more work, a show insider said that that’s perfectly normal and that the Downton Abbey filming schedule allows the actors time to pursue other projects. Also, the source states that though broadcasters have been looking for a new Sunday show, the show in question wouldn’t necessarily replace Downton.

“There is other time for cast members to do other work,” the insider told People, adding of the new show rumors, “There are many other Sundays in the year to fill.”
