‘Downton Abbey’ Movie To Be Released In 2019

On September 13, 2019, Universal Pictures International will release the Downton Abbey movie internationally and exactly one week later on September 20, 2019, Focus Features will release it in North America.

Fans of Downton have been waiting patiently for the Crawley family’s return. “We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors, and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of Downton to the big screen next September,” Focus chairman Peter Kujawski said.

Downton Abbey is a television series that followed the lives of the Crawley family and their servants at the turn of the 20th century in an Edwardian English country house. 

The show has had six successful seasons, earning three Golden Globe Awards, 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, and 69 total Emmy nominations, making Downton the most nominated non-US television show in the history of the Emmy’s. 

Downton Abbey also broke a Guinness World Record for having the highest critically rated TV show.

The Downton Abbey movie will star it’s original cast from the Downton Abbey TV series, which include Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Joanne Froggatt, Matthew Goode, Harry Hadden-Paton, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Lesley Nicol, Penelope Wilton, and Academy-Award winner Maggie Smith. The new cast members include Academy-Award nominee Imelda Staunton, Geraldine James, Simon Jones, David Haig, Tuppence Middleton, Kate Phillips, and Stephen Campbell Moore.

Academy-Award winner and creator and writer of Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes will produce The Downton Abbey movie alongside Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge, and Michael Engler has agreed to come back to direct.

According to Vanity Fair, the movie will most likely take place between 1926 and 1930, during the age of Agatha Christie, the first talkie films, and King George V.
