Downton Abbey, which aired its final episode in 2015, may shoot a movie spinoff, according to creator Julian Fellowes.
When asked before the Emmys if Downton Abbey had a movie in the works, Fellowes addressed the rumors by saying he had a plot in mind already. “I don’t have much to say about it except that I think it would be a great idea,” Fellowes said. “I’m just waiting to hear the powers that be give their permission.”
The cast of the hit show appear to be on board as well. “We’re all willing to do it, and willing it to happen,” says Joanne Froggatt, who played lady’s maid Anna Bates. “As long as we can get everyone together, it would be delightful. We’ve talked about it and we’re hopeful that there will be a chance to do it again.”
The series was up for the Best Drama Series at the Emmys Sunday, but lost to HBO’s Game of Thrones, now the winningest show in Emmy history. Dame Maggie Smith did win the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress over three of the Game of Thrones actresses, but the Scot was not present to accept her award. Host Jimmy Kimmel joked, “Maggie, if you want this, it’ll be in the lost and found. You must be present to win. If we call your name and you’re not here to accept, the Emmy goes to the next name on the list. It’s called the ‘Maggie Smith Rule.'”
Smith, of course, responded in style.
