Doug Gansler, Maryland Attorney General, Defends Not Intervening In Alcohol-Fueled Teen Beach Party

Doug Gansler, who currently serves as Maryland’s attorney general and is seeking the office of the governor, addressed his decision to not put a stop to a teen beach party that had underage drinking.

Gansler, who has long stated his objection to underage drinking, publicly defended his choice to ignore the illicit behavior he encountered when he went to the Delaware beach party to speak with his son. "I wasn't the chief law enforcement in that state; I was there as a parent," he said at a press event. "Perhaps I should have assumed there was drinking going on, and I got that wrong. There could be Kool-Aid in the red cups, but there's probably beer in the red cups.”

While Gansler appeared to admit some sort of negligence on his part at the press event, he defended himself more firmly with The Baltimore Sun "Assume for purposes of discussion that there was widespread drinking at this party," he told the newspaper. "How is that relevant to me? …The question is, do I have any moral authority over other people's children at beach week in another state? I say no."

The controversy surrounding Gansler's appearance at the party began when the gubernatorial hopeful appeared in photographs with the teen revelers, trying to make his way through the house that were posted to Instagram and obtained by The Sun. In the photo, teens in bathing suits and tank tops are dancing on the floor and on the table top, and the infamous red cups are everywhere.

Though Gansler’s choice to not take action to stop the teen drinking might not effect his standing with many of his would-be voters, the attorney general is developing a reputation for disregarding laws. Over the summer, it was reported that Gansler encourages the state troopers who drive him to do whatever they have to do to get him to his appointments on time – speed, run lights, etc. He also waited 16 months before paying a speeding ticket he received in his own vehicle. Furthermore, the Democratic politician has been accused of race baiting, after charging that Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown’s main ambition is to become first black governor of Maryland.
