Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill revealed that he has been playing with an injury to his left wrist after being detained by Miami-Dade police officers on Sept. 8.
Ahead of Miami’s 23-15 road victory over the Rams Monday night, the Dolphins told ESPN that Hill has been quiet about a torn ligament in his wrist since training camp. Still, the injury became worse after his encounter with the police outside the Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium. The star player said his MRI appointment revealed the torn ligament, and he played last week despite his questionable performance due to his injury.
“That arrest messed me up, and I’m not going to let it stop me,” Hill told ESPN. He withheld the detainments’ effect when discussing his rest after Monday’s game. Hill was handcuffed to the ground just hours before Miami’s win against the Jaguars in the season opener.
The South Florida Police Benevolent Association shared a statement describing the time Hill was detained for irregular and dangerous driving, putting himself and others at risk. Upon confrontation, Hill was placed into handcuffs, and the scene of his arrest was captured on police bodycam footage. Hill received two citations for his traffic stop, including careless driving and a seatbelt violation.
Despite his injury, Hill had three receptions for 16 yards, including his first touchdown since week 1 when he caught a short touchdown pass from Tua Tagovailo in the third quarter.
The officer responsible for the arrest, Danny Torres, racked up six suspensions and multiple reprimands before the encounter.
Torres has a tainted disciplinary record, including the recent Hill arrest, that has him suspended for as many as 50 days between 2014 and 2019. Two suspensions were for five days each in February 2014 and February 2016. Torres also had a 20-day suspension in October 2018 and a 10-day suspension in June 2019.
Following Hills’ arrest, James Reyes, the Miami-Dade County chief of public safety, said, “The actions displayed on the video do not meet the standard we expect from law enforcement and are deeply concerning. I am committed to ensuring accountability for any officer misconduct identified in the investigation, and we will continue to keep the community informed.”
In January, a child with a lighter caused a fire at the player’s Miami mansion.
