Donald Trump has been called out for his awkward handshakes, specifically between Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.
Abe flew to Washington D.C. last week to meet with the president. In addition to getting a VIP tour of the White House, Abe also sat down with Trump to discuss the economy and the security of their respective countries. Despite the diplomatic affair, most people have focused on the awkward handshake between the two leaders.
The arm pumping lasted nearly 30 seconds, during which Trump put his left hand on top of Abe’s already-shaking hand. At the end of it, Trump said, “strong hands,” in reference to Abe.
Reporters can be heard speaking Japanese in the video of the meet and greet, and Trump asks Abe what they are saying. “Look at me,” says Abe, to which Trump turns and looks at the PM. But then the PM has to correct him, and point at the cameras. The room shares an awkward laugh.
Trump met with Trudeau earlier this week, and was met with similar handshake ridicule. As much as the Internet enjoyed the handshake between Trump and Abe, it even more like the one with Trudeau. While Trump shook hands in a similar fashion, Trudeau took a brief pause before accepting, a moment that has been spreading around the Internet like wildfire.
