In his first major social event as president, Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump hosted the 139th annual Easter Egg Roll on the White House’s South Lawn on Sunday. In the weeks leading up to event – planning falls unto the First Lady and her staff – the White House spoke of a scaled back celebration, estimating 21,000 guests would attend (last year, 35,000 people attended Barack Obama‘s final event).
But the one guest that truly matters on Easter did make an appearance – the Easter Bunny, or, at least, a slightly creepier, slightly more shocked, and slightly visually impaired version of the Easter Bunny.
The Bunny, which stood about the same height as Trump’s youngest son, Barron, accompanied the First Family onto the Truman Balcony where both the President and the First Lady addressed the crowd. The Bunny was given a microphone and a stand but did not speak to the crowd.
The event, largely seen as the most important social event on the White House calendar, came only days after the Trump administration announced they would not publicly disclose their visitor logs – a break in precedent from the Obama years.
With Trump’s relationship with the public already in question, the Easter Egg Roll would prove as an opportunity to convince other’s that he is one with the American people. Unfortunately, the President committed two gaffes, not including the undercover Donnie Darko bunny.
At one point, Trump signed a child’s hat, only to toss it into a crowd of people.
But before making his way into the crowd, it appears that the President needed to reminded to put his hand over his heart during the singing of the National Anthem.
With the Easter Egg Roll behind them, the White House traditionally would turn their sights to The White House Correspondent’s Dinner but Trump will not be attending that event, the first president in 36 years to do so.
