Donald Trump and Univision have settled Trump’s lawsuit over Univision’s decision to drop Miss USA and Miss Universe telecasts last year.
Last June, the Republican presidential nominee sued Univision for $500 million after Univision dropped the beauty pageants following Trump’s derogatory remarks about Mexican immigrants. Trump claimed that Mexico is “sending people that have lots of problems… They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume are good people,” he said.
The suit claimed that Univision had broken contractual terms and was “a politically motivated attempt to suppress Mr. Trump’s freedom of speech under the First Amendment.” Univision tried to dismiss the suit, saying Trump was using this to “further his own campaign.”
The conflict between Univision and Trump has been unexpectedly public. For example, Trump kicked Univision anchor, Jorge Ramos, out of an Iowa news conference in August after Ramos tried to question him about immigration. He also turned away a Univision press crew from a Florida event.
But now things seemed to have settled down as Trump said in a statement from Univision. “I have known Univision’s President and CEO, Randy Falco, for more than 20 years and I’m glad we are able to put these differences behind us.”
Falco said that he was “pleased to settle this matter and move forward.”
NBC had also canceled plans to air the Miss USA pageant at the time, and were co-owners of both pageants with Trump. But Trump’s lawsuit against NBC reached an agreement which required Trump to buy the remainder of the pageant’s ownership. Last Fall, Trump sold the Miss Universe Organization to the talent agency WME-IMG for an undisclosed sum of money. The details of this settlement also have not been disclosed.
