Donald Trump told supporters in Iowa that he would be willing to spend one billion dollars on his campaign to become President of the United States.
Trump followed many candidates for the 2016 Presidential election to Iowa this weekend. The businessman and GOP frontrunner addressed reporters just outside the Iowa State Fair grounds on Saturday. When asked whether or not Trump had a budget for his “Make America Great Again” campaign, Trump dismissed the idea, claiming it was “irrelevant.”
“You saw I make $400 million a year, so what difference does it make?” Trump asked the reporter.
When Trump announced his candidacy for President, he promised supporters that his campaign would differ from those of his Republican counterparts because, unlike other politicians, he does not have to rely on donors to fund his campaign. “I’m using my own money. I’m not using lobbyists; I’m not using donors,” he said during his announcement speech.
On Saturday, Trump doubled down on his previous assertions of his wealth when asked if he would be willing to spend $1 billion on his campaign, responding, “I would do that, yeah. If I had to.”
Trump added that money was essential to his “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan, stating, “We can’t make it great unless we make it rich.” He also took a jab at Jeb Bush, saying that he would be a “puppet” at the mercy of his donors.
During the press conference, Trump also dismissed the suggestion that he had made any mistakes throughout his early campaign, despite many people calling his response to Megyn Kelly‘s debate questions sexist, among other scandals. “I don’t think I’ve made mistakes. I mean, every time they say I make a mistake, they do the polls, and my numbers go up. So, I guess I haven’t made any mistakes,” Trump said.
