On Saturday morning, former President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social that he expects to be arrested on Tuesday for his involvement in filing false business records for his hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 election.
Trump’s lawyers immediately followed up that Trump based his comment on media reports that the FBI was preparing security around the Manhattan courthouse and not from any official communication.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has convened a grand jury in Manhattan in the case. The grand jury has heard from at least seven witnesses including former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, who served a year in prison for his role in the hush money payment. Daniels testified remotely last week.
If arrested, Trump would be booked, photographed and must appear before the court to face the charges. Experts say he is unlikely to be sent to jail before the case is heard.
Trump faces multiple legal challenges in the coming weeks. An Atlanta DA appears close to indicting Trump for illegally trying to overturn the state’s 2020 presidential election results. A special counsel is also investigating Trump for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot and mishandling of classified government documents.
