Donald Trump kicked Univision anchor Jorge Ramos out of a press conference in Iowa Tuesday when the journalist tried to ask the Republican presidential candidate a few questions.
When Ramos first attempted to question Trump, the aspiring politician, who hadn’t called on the reporter, dismissed him. “Sit down, you weren’t called,” Trump spat at Ramos. “Go back to Univision.” Ramos persisted with efforts to ask the presidential hopeful a question and was subsequently removed from the room by security.
The reporters that remained in the room then questioned Trump about whether or not it was a just move to have Ramos escorted from the conference. Trump, as usual, dug his heels in, explaining, “He was not chosen” to ask the first question, and adding, “He just stands up and starts screaming. If he wanted to come back in, I’d love to have him…. He’s obviously a very emotional person.”
True to his word, Trump did have Ramos brought back into the conference and ended up debating the well-known reporter for roughly five minutes. Ramos started off by questioning Trump about his plans to deport immigrants. Trump replied with talk about getting rid of the gangs first, and then building a wall that will have “a big, beautiful door where people can come in legally.”
When asked for specifics about his plans, Trump said, “I’m a great manager, I know how to manage things.” Trump also attempted to shut down Ramos’ argument against the use of the term “illegal immigrants,” claiming that the term is accurate, as pertains to the law.
On Wednesday morning, Trump stood by his decision to have Ramos kicked out of the press conference initially, suggesting that it was for the benefit of the other reporters present.
“I would have gotten to him very quickly,” Trump told Today’s Matt Lauer. “This man gets up and starts ranting and raving and screaming, and honestly being very disrespectful to all the other reporters.”
As for Univision, which is being sued by Trump to the tune of $500 million over its decision to pull the Miss USA pageant, it wants Trump to sit down with Ramos for an in-depth interview on the issues.
“We’d love for Mr. Trump to sit down for an in-depth interview with Jorge to talk about the specifics of his proposals,” said Univision chief executive officer Isaac Lee. “We think his thoughts on the topic of immigration are important to Jorge’s viewers on Fusion and Univision.”
