Donald Trump Jr. took the stand in the New York civil fraud trial against his family and the Trump Organization and claimed that he knew “nothing” about basic accounting principles that he and others are accused of violating.
The suit against former President Donald Trump was brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who has accused Trump and his family of fraudulently inflating their net worth to secure better rates on loans.
Trump Jr. introduced himself to the court as a “real estate broker,” claiming that he had forgotten much of what he had once known about New York’s rent-stabilization laws. He also could not recall whether his father was still a trustee in the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, which held his assets before he took office in 2017.
The former president’s son even claimed that he did not know how to pronounce the word “revocable.”
“Now that we finally have the opportunity to ask an actual trustee, is it re-VOH-cable or REH-vocable?” asked presiding Judge Arthur Engoron.
“Your honor, it’s a good question,” replied Trump Jr. “But I actually don’t have the answer.”
Trump Jr.’s vague responses contradict the state’s claim that he is one of the only senior Trump Organization figures with personal knowledge of the performance of certain properties named in the case, including the Trump International Hotel in Chicago and the Trump Tower in New York.
His signature appears on many of the documents that James has deemed fraudulent.
The Trump family has denied any wrongdoing in the case. The court heard from Eric Trump on Thursday and the former president today. Ivanka Trump will testify on Wednesday.
In his testimony, Eric contradicted statements he made in his sworn deposition.
