Donald Trump
Donald Trump logged on to Twitter in the early hours of Friday morning to rant about former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, his presidential election foe Hillary Clinton and the media.
On Monday, during the first presidential debate of the general election, Clinton went after Trump on his treatment of women, putting his treatment of Machado front and center. Clinton revealed that Trump had called Machado “Miss Piggy,” and “Miss Housekeeping” in reference to her Hispanic heritage. In the aftermath of the debate, Trump’s comments about Machado and his insistence on doubling down on them have dominated his news coverage – thanks in no small part to his own inability to move on from the topic.
Trump still could not move on in the early hours of Friday morning.
“Wow, Crooked Hillary was duped and used by my worst Miss U. Hillary floated her as an ‘angel’ without checking her past, which is terrible!” Trump tweeted, adding, “Using Alicia M in the debate as a paragon of virtue just shows that Crooked Hillary suffers from BAD JUDGEMENT! Hillary was set up by a con.”
Then, Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, essentially encouraged his followers to watch a sex tape. “Did Crooked Hillary help disgusting (check out sex tape and past) Alicia M become a U.S. citizen so she could use her in the debate?” he asked.
While Trump has been fighting the Machado story all week, multiple new articles have come out with damning allegations about his business dealings. One suggests that he violated the U.S. embargo against Cuba. Another claims that the Trump foundation was never certified to solicit money. Trump’s defense strategy is to slam the sources who helped break the stories for Newsweek and The Washington Post, two respected publications.
“Anytime you see a story about me or my campaign saying ‘sources said,’ DO NOT believe it. There are no sources, they are just made up lies!” Trump wrote in one tweet. In another tweet several hours later, he wrote, “Remember, don’t believe ‘sources said’ by the VERY dishonest media. If they don’t name the sources, the sources don’t exist.”
