NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 25: Magazine Columnist E. Jean Carroll leaves after the first day of her civil trial against former President Donald Trump at Manhattan Federal Court on April 25, 2023 in New York City. Jury selections begin in the Carroll civil trial against the former president, which she alleges attacked and sexually assaulted her in a dressing room of a luxury department store in the 1990s. The lawsuit comes after the passage of the Adult Survivors Act, a 2022 New York law that gave a one-year window beginning in November of that year for people to sue their alleged assailants even if the statute of limitations had expired, which had happened in Carroll’s case. The former president has stated that this never happened and has denied meeting her. (Photo by Michael M. Santiago/Getty Images)
Former President Donald J. Trump has been found liable for sexually abusing and defaming magazine writer E. Jean Carroll.
The jury, comprised of six men and three women, rejected Carroll’s claims of rape. Even with two of Carroll’s witnesses largely matching her recollection of the incident, they still couldn’t prove that Trump engaged in sexual intercourse with her.
Although claims of rape could not be proven, the jury determined that Carroll was sexually abused and defamed.

In November 2019, Carroll file a lawsuit against Trump accusing him of rape that allegedly happened in Bergdorf Goodman in the mid-1990s. Trump denied her claims in an October 2022 post, on his self-made Truth Social platform, calling her a liar and the claims a “complete con job.”
Carroll was fired from Elle, where she had been working for 26 years, within months of Trump’s post.
Before the eight-day trial came to an end, Trump posted once again on his Truth Social account claiming that he was not “not allowed to speak or defend” himself. In contrast, Trump was in fact, given three days to testify and was asked multiple times to speak but refused to do so.
Trump was ordered to pay Carroll $5 million in damages.
Among the numerous sexual allegations Trump faces, Carroll’s case is the first to find Trump liable.
